How do I know if I'm gay?
Deciding if you are gay or not can be a confusing period in your life. Just because you are attracted to/are physically intimate with members of the same sex, does not mean that you will necessarily choose to or feel comfortable identifying as gay or lesbian. When should I tell people I'm gay?
Deciding when to 'come out' can be very hard. Only you will know when you are ready to tell people and who to tell first. It's fine to keep it private for as long as you want. However there are a few things you may like to consider: -
You might want to wait until you are in a secure situation in case of a bad reaction.
- It can be easier to tell people when you have a support network of friends around you.
- If you need someone to talk to there are many helplines and organisations around. local services
- When you tell people they may tell others regardless of whether or not you have asked them to keep it to themselves.
- Once you've told them you can't take it back so be aware who you are telling.
- You may lose a few friends who are prejudiced or afraid.
- Some people will be proud you chose to tell them first.
- True friends will stick by you whatever you decide
