Lesbians

Although lesbians are considered a low risk group in respect of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), this does not mean that women who have sex with women should ignore the possible risks of unprotected sex. Some of the more common STIs for lesbians to be aware of are thrush, genital warts, herpes, cystitis, crabs and scabies. In order to ensure you do not have any infections you could examine yourself regularly looking for anything out of the ordinary and if at all concerned you might want to consult the GUM Clinic or your GP if you feel it's appropriate.

As lesbians are considered a low risk group for STI's, many consider the risk of cervical cancer as being negligible too. This is not true. Changes to cervical cells may be caused by a number of factors including diet, exercise and smoking. It is important to have a smear test regularly whether your partners are men or women (see self-examination).
